CHAPTER EIGHT:

HUBRIS

There was no bright light, no tunnel, no greetings by old departed friends, which was ironically advantageous to me. It meant I was still alive. For now.

Only the gentle warm breeze of the Hall of Records brushed my cheeks, and it lasted just long enough for me to question whether I felt it at all. Then I slammed back into my body on earth, opened my eyes, and sucked in a long, hoarse breath, replacing the stale air in my lungs with the fresh, open air that rarely seemed to settle over New Orleans streets from the higher elevations.

“’Bout time,” Marco yelled into my ear, through the wind that whipped around us.

We were aloft, the pads of my feet without any pressure against them and only Marco’s arm looped across my torso, pinning me against him, and his hand at my neck. Feeling his body solidly against me, my first instinct was a sweeping, unimpeded disgust. Then my senses returned, at a heightened level, giving me a strong understanding of exactly where I was being held.

Stretched out below us was Congo Square, a park where Marie Laveau, the Creole voodoo practitioner once performed her rituals. It sat just above the northwest corner of the French Quarter. A dozen people were peering up through its trees, some with cell phones raised at us.

We were several hundred yards up, well out of identity range, but in front of us, in a solid line, hovered the three Blackhawk helicopters, their blades cutting the air sharply and irritating my ear drums. I saw the drooping mouth of one pilot as he listened to commands that were muffled to me through his earpiece. He spoke just two words—“Copy that”—and then a gun barrel began shifting in our direction.

Marco had been shouting into my ear the entire time and then stopped to mutter something about me being poor insurance against their assault.

“You moron!” I shouted at him. “I’m a hindrance to them!”

I pitched my head backwards, feeling the crush of soft tissue as his nose shifted aside and then the thick pressure of our skulls connecting. It felt worse than I expected, a dense resounding ringing inside my head exploded, causing me to blink back the pain.

But too much time had passed.

The hail of gunfire was launched at us, the chug-chug-chug of the barrel’s automatic fire slowing in my mind, my ear drums detecting each round’s velocity and distance as they coursed through the sky. I braced for their impact, expecting the searing heat to shred my delicate organic body, knowing the agony would be breathtaking and leave me speechless as I awaited death.

The ammunition, however, never made it to me. Each round veered in the opposite direction as if hitting and reflecting off an invisible barrier.

The firing helicopter shifted to the side and, strangely, it’s gun barrel swiveled in the other copter’s direction. The pilots of that craft jerked frantically in their seats, screaming into their linked communication system. The first pilot desperately tried to regain control.
